I often interpret a lot of crying online as #sadbait, it seems like a really weird thing to record yourself doing. I had a cry session in my boyfriend's arms yesterday and being in the moment, at no point did I think to like memorialize the moment with a photo or something lol. I was too busy feeling feelings.

I'm very curious about how social networks will incorporate security processes for when users pass away. It's very morbid but will accounts have digital tombstones? Will users be able to setup end dates for the public nature of their accounts, can they set them to delete or expire? Fascinating to contemplate!

Thanks for sharing such a personal story. I think you're so right with the "in the moment" importance.

For some people, or actually for a lot of people, these arms can only happen "virtually". Because they are on their own, because they can be physically constrained, because they can feel lonely as well. My gut feeling is that we see more and more real feelings / attachments / needs for hugs whatever their nature actually is. It also reminds me a lot the phone and how Samaritans still have an important role to play with such an "analog" device. In the end, it's how people want to express their deep, real selves, at a specific moment in time.

For the pass-away thingy: it's a whole new world which is occurring. I wrote about it ages ago but you point a very important and worrying approach: when will the accounts be deleted? In a very morbid (as well) way, graveyards spots tend to be replaced when families stop...paying them (I don't know how it works in other countries but in France, it's the case). Is the digital renewal different from "real life" process?

Fascinating indeed. And so many areas in which we probably need to work on.

So true re: virtual hugs due to ongoing loneliness. I think overall people are seeking connections and support.
